How FollowStride handles your data.
Last updated 9 August 2026
FollowStride (“we”) is a running-coach app for iPhone and Apple Watch. This policy explains exactly what the app reads, what leaves your device, and what we keep. It describes the app as it actually behaves — if you find a discrepancy, treat it as a bug and tell us.
The short version. Your training data lives on your iPhone. Nothing is stored on our servers. The only data that leaves your device is the summary of your metrics we send to generate a coaching answer, and that isn't retained after the answer comes back. No analytics, no advertising, no third-party trackers, and no user accounts on our servers.
1. What FollowStride reads
Apple Health, with your permission
Heart rate, heart-rate variability, resting heart rate, sleep, active energy, steps, VO₂ max, walking and running distance, running speed, and running-form metrics (stride length, ground contact time, vertical oscillation, running power), plus your recorded running workouts. These are read to score your daily readiness, track training load, and ground the coaching in your real numbers. If you don't grant access, FollowStride says it has no data rather than estimating.
Apple Health, written back
When you record a run, it's saved to Health as a running workout with distance, active energy and your GPS route, so it appears in Health and Fitness alongside the rest of your training.
Location
While you're recording a run — including in the background with the screen off — FollowStride uses precise location to map your route and measure distance, pace and elevation. This applies on Apple Watch as well: a run started on the watch records its route on the watch and saves it to Apple Health with the workout, which is how it reaches your iPhone. FollowStride also uses your coarse position to look up current conditions through Apple WeatherKit. It does not track your location when you aren't recording a run.
Motion
Step and cadence data from the motion coprocessor during a run.
Your profile
What you enter during onboarding: name, age, sex, height, weight, experience level, weekly mileage, typical pace, goal, training days, injury history, running surfaces, shoes, and an optional target race.
Sign in with Apple
An Apple-provided user identifier, and your name if you choose to share it. Apple lets you withhold your name and hide your email; the app works either way. We never receive your Apple ID password.
2. What leaves your device
Your training data is stored on your iPhone. There is no FollowStride account and no FollowStride database. One thing leaves the device:
Coaching requests
When you use the AI coach, the daily summary, or any analysis screen, the app sends a request to our proxy, which forwards it to Anthropic's Claude API to generate the response. That request contains:
- your onboarding profile, including your first name if you provided one;
- the Apple Health metrics listed above, as measured values;
- current weather conditions at your location — the conditions themselves, not your coordinates;
- for run analysis, the distance, time, pace, cadence, calories and heart-rate range of that run.
It does not contain your GPS route or coordinates, your Apple ID, your email address, your device identifiers, or your run history beyond the summary above.
Our proxy does not log, store or retain the content of these requests. It holds two things, both operational: a device attestation key used to verify requests come from a genuine copy of the app, and a per-device counter used for rate limiting. Neither identifies you.
Anthropic processes the request to produce the reply. Their handling is governed by their own terms — see Anthropic's privacy policy.
Apple WeatherKit
Retrieving conditions sends your approximate location to Apple, under Apple's privacy policy. Your location leaves the device for no other purpose.
3. What we don't do
- We don't sell or share your data with data brokers or advertisers.
- We don't track you across apps or websites, and the app contains no tracking identifiers. FollowStride doesn't use App Tracking Transparency because it has nothing to ask for.
- There are no third-party analytics, crash-reporting, advertising or attribution SDKs. The app is built entirely on Apple frameworks.
- We don't build advertising or marketing profiles from your health data.
- We don't use your data to train AI models. We have no ability to — we don't retain it.
4. Where your data is stored
On your iPhone, in the app's private container: your profile and shoe rotation in app preferences, and your run log — including routes and splits — as a file in the app's Application Support directory. Workouts you record are also written to Apple Health, which is governed by Apple's own protections and encrypted on device.
If you back up your iPhone to iCloud or a computer, that backup may include FollowStride's data, under Apple's backup encryption.
5. Deleting your data
- Sign out to erase the profile, cached AI text, shoe mileage and run log from the device. The app clears these deliberately, so the next person to use the phone doesn't inherit your training data.
- Delete the app to remove everything stored locally.
- Workouts already written to Apple Health are yours and stay there. Remove them in the Health app under Browse → Activity → Workouts.
- Because we hold nothing on our servers, there's no account to delete and no data-export request to make. If you'd like that confirmed in writing, email us.
6. Children
FollowStride isn't directed at children under 13 and we don't knowingly collect data from them.
7. Medical disclaimer
FollowStride is a training tool, not a medical device. Its readiness scores, injury-risk estimates and coaching are generated from your training data and may be wrong. They are not a diagnosis and not medical advice. Talk to a qualified professional about pain, injury, or any health decision.
8. Changes
If this policy changes materially we'll update the date above and note the change in the app's release notes.
